Klimahaus®

An Ambient Evocation of the Antarctic Night Sky

Café Südwärts needed to be more than a place to stop for refreshments. It needed to be part of the round-the-world journey of Klimahaus®; a southbound exploratory vessel en route to the Antarctic. Every aspect of its design needed to reflect this – and the team devised a striking solution that was at once visually thrilling and acoustically practical.

Creatively combining METAL Baffle Elements in shades of blue, the team transformed the ceiling into a star-studded polar firmament – an ambient evocation of the Antarctic night sky. Matching these aesthetics was a firm focus on practicality: a special substructure allowed the team to hide and maintain access to equipment above the starlit scene, while the solution’s acoustic performance gave visitors the peace and quiet to contemplate their Klimahaus® journey.
